Over the summer I took some time out of social media and stopped collaborating for a bit do a deep dive into myself musically and met a fair few ghosts from the past and personal demons while I was there. It felt like being in a cocoon.
I just had to to it - the pandemic means everyone's lives are being played out online. We've all had to learn these new skills, spending half our time on Zoom - virtual reality taking over while our lives shrunk through being confined. We all started to make friends all around the world, being affected by all their tragedies, feeling helpless, sometimes thousands of miles away from where we could actually do something. It all caused a bit of burnout.
So I decided to start working on my solo album, experimenting like I did as a kid when I played with my dad's obsolescent machines he brought home from the lab. It's fun playing with samplers, like making my own kind of organ using a sample of my voice - then resampling it, reversing, layering up and mucking about. My latest is playing with gating synths. The album is slowly, organically growing. Not sure when I am going to be done. Watch this space.
