You Know When It Makes You Laugh Out Loud?

Its easy to get uptight making music - especially if your parents always had BBC Radio 3 playing and you went to music college. There's this idea that making music, or any sort of creativity, is a serious business, full of frowning.

But there is something in it, when you are working creatively and something you do cracks you up. You know you are onto something. I am sure Thelonious Monk must have laughed - thinking "I can't believe I am actually composing this piece of music, like this and it sounds like this!" and not just Monk - you can hear humour everywhere in music. Its weird that you have no control over it, like the universe is speaking through you.

So this is what astonishes me - that in the tail end of a global pandemic, when there have been health scares, tragedies, me and everyone else have been struggling with our mental health and I mindfully retreat into myself over the summer, to re-connect with my authentic musical source, what pops out and I know should be the single, has all the seriousness of white gloves, dummies, fluoro gear, and glow sticks. Apologies in advance - but it still says in the concrete on the ground, outside my mum's house, from when the cable was being laid down, 'Brentford Hardcore' - with an arrow pointing to it....
